James Heidel Melton

Memorial services for James Heidel “Meck” Melton will be held Friday at noon at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Mr. Melton, 90, of Meridian, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Riley Hospital.

Mr. Melton was a lifelong resident of Meridian and graduated from Meridian High School where he excelled in sports. He lettered in football, baseball and boxing there and earned a scholarship in football to Ole Miss. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II in Europe under the command of Gen. George S. Patton. He retired in 1945 with the rank of Major.

Mr. Melton was an outstanding citizen serving several terms on the Meridian City Council and as a long-time treasurer of the Downtown Optimist Club.

He served also several terms on the Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church including one term as the Senior Warden. He was employed for more than 35 years as manager of the Meridian office for the Biddle Purchasing Company, which was headquartered in New York, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years, Lillie Mae Moore Melton; a daughter, Pamela Melton Fort of Meridian; a son, Daniel Trueheart Melton of Lafayette, La.; a brother William “Billy” Melton and his wife, Peggy Sanders Melton of Meridian; grandchildren, Natalie Fort Moffett and her husband, Robert Breckenridge Moffett of Atlanta, Allison Trueheart Fort of Atlanta, William Ferrell Fort of Meridian and Matthew Melton Fort, a student at the University of Mississippi; nieces, Betty Trueheart Williams Martin and her husband, James Bruce Martin of Birmingham, Jan Tolson Waterhouse of Ocean Springs and a nephew, Thomas Edward Williams of Meridian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. Melton and Eileen Heidel Melton; sons, James Duncan Melton and Bruce Lee Melton and a sister, Rebecca Melton Wheeler.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Building Fund or the Memorial Fund.

Visitation will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.



Rodney Jay Harrison

Services for Rodney Jay Harrison will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Branning officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Neshoba County.

Mr. Harrison, 70, of Meridian, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. He was benefactor to many by holding more than 20 fundraising benefits to help those in need over the years. He was in the trucking business for more than 20 years and the owner of two nightclubs.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Harrison of Meridian; daughters, Sandy Williams and her husband, Don, of Memphis, Tenn., Deborah Dudley and her husband, William, of Crystal Springs; a son, Jeff Whitlock and his wife, Tiffany, of Gallman; step-children, Denise McMullen and her husband, Marty, of Meridian and Richard Allen of Meridian; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mazelle Rowell of Newton; brothers, Charles Harrison and his wife, Diane, of Hickory and Leonard Harrison of Newton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Harrison and a daughter, Tina Harrison.

Pallbearers will be Jay Kellum, Christopher Dudley, Rodney Hancock, Brandon Hancock, John Henry Smith, Fred Gressett and Charlie Harrison. Honorary pallbearer will be Brett Fassbender.

Visitation will be today from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

LOUISVILLE — Services for Jack V. Fleming will be held today at 11 a.m. at Nowell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Fleming, 58, of Louisville, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Rush Foundation Hospital. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church in Meridian.

Survivors include his sons, Jack Edward Fleming of Mobile, Ala. and Christopher Lyn Fleming and his wife, Lynda,of Meridian; the mother of his children, Judith Fleming of Meridian; his mother, Hazel Carter Fleming of Mobile; a sister, Kathy Fleming Whatley and her husband, David, of Baton Rouge, La. and one grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth Fleming of Meridian.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy F. Fleming and his grandparents, Vivian and Ruby Carter of the Liberty Community and Ulyus J. and Nell Fleming of Quitman.

Pallbearers will be Edward Fleming, Lyn Fleming, Ray Sims, Jason Whatley, John Albert Young, and Matt Young.

Services for Clover Payne will be held today at 1 p.m. at Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church in Bay Springs with the Rev. Albert Shaw officiating. Burial will be in John Devine Cemetery in Bay Springs. Clark’s Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Payne, 79, of Bay Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, in his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
