A group of seven participants from the Meridian Swim Association "Sharks" turned in a solid performance in last week's Mississippi Long Course State Championship Meet in Cleveland.

Meridian's Clayton Boyd successfully defended his state championship in the 100m butterfly; while Thompson Schille had a pair of runnerup finishes and racked up the most points for the MSA team in the meet held at Delta State University.

"The team was well represented by all of the swimmers," MSA coach Tracey Cronley said. "These kids have worked very hard all summer long and their hard work certainly paid off."

Boyd captured first place in the 100m butterfly for a second straight year, finishing in 59.30 seconds.

He was also second in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:16.99.

The 18-year-old Boyd also had a fourth-place finish in the 200m butterfly (2:17.57); a sixth-place finish in the 100m freestyle (57.33); a 10th-place spot in the 200m freestyle; and a 16th-place finish in the 50m freestyle.

Schille, 11, had runnerup finishes in both the 400m freestyle with a time of 5:06.71 and the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:26.14.

He was third in the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:07.51; eighth in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:58.86; and 10th in the 50m butterfly.
