Goodman is tagged out

Enterprise High School's Jordan Goodman is tagged out trying to steal second base as she gets caught up in the legs of Loyd Star's Abagail Thornton Friday.

ENTERPRISE — Enterprise High School issued 11 walks and committed five errors en route to a 6-3 loss at the hands of Loyd Star High School in the second round of the MHSAA Class 2A softball playoffs Friday evening.

The loss leaves the Lady Bulldogs staring elimination in the face, as Enterprise will travel to Loyd Star today for Game 2 in the best-of-three series.

“Walks and errors,” head coach Davey Dewitt said in frustration afterward. “Walks and errors. That’s it; that’s all you can say.”

The signs were there early that those two things would be the difference. Loyd Star tallied three runs in the top of the first after two batters reached via walk and Mackenzie Smith hit a ball to right field that was misplayed, resulting in all three runners crossing home plate. The Lady Hornets added another run in the top of the third inning when Ali Gartman came in on an error, giving Loyd Star a 4-0 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. A fielder’s choice groundout by Shawanda Gray scored Lauren Smith from third, and an error on a ball put in play by Jordan Goodman led to another Enterprise run. A second error on a ball put in play by Kaleigh Russell sent in Goodman.

With the score 4-3, Loyd Star tacked on a run in the top of the fifth inning when a bases-loaded walk by Brooks Rushing scored Abagail Thornton.

The Lady Hornets again loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth, but Enterprise starter Delaney Davidson pitched her way out of it without surrendering a run. It wasn’t enough to get the Lady Bulldog bats going, however, as Loyd Star scored one more insurance run in the top of the seventh and kept the Lady Bulldogs’ offense at bay.

Davidson suffered the loss, going all seven innings and giving up six runs, four earned, on four hits.

At the plate, Davidson was 2-for-4, and Goodman finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. today, and Dewitt said his girls would have put the mistakes behind them if they’re going to come away with a win on the road.

“We just have to go down there and play better,” he said. “We have to eliminate walks and errors. That’s all we can do. You can’t give good teams like that extra outs, because when you do, they score runs, and that’s what happened tonight.”
