A pedestrian hit and killed by a vehicle traveling on Highway 45 North Saturday night has been identified by family members.
According to Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler, 43-year-old John Edward Rainer, of the Meridian area was walking in a passing lane when he was struck by a car and killed on impact.
“He was about 2 feet in the passing lane walking north, and there was a husband and wife from Texas going north on 45,” Cobler said.
Cobler did not have the names of the couple. The husband, who was driving, and his wife were unharmed.
Cobler said he is ruling the death, which happened at 7 p.m., an accident.
The incident is under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Attempts to reach the Mississippi Highway Patrol Saturday and Sunday were unsuccessful.
