For the 20th consecutive year, Meridian has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The 2009 award was presented before the council by Kevin Locke, of the city's planning division, and members of the city's tree committee.

Meridian had to meet the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: having a tree board, having a tree care ordinance, spending $2 per capita on a community forestry program, and having an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
