A longtime Lauderdale County Circuit Court employee and Lauderdale County School Board member who has been on a leave of absence from her position there was arrested Thursday afternoon by authorities with the State Auditor's Office and charged with embezzlement.
Samantha Boutwell, 42, of Causeyville Road, was taken into custody as a result of an investigation that was launched in August of 2007. Boutwell allegedly embezzled approximately $6,000 in a two and a half year period from marriage fees paid to the office.
Sources close to the case said authorities with the State Auditor's Office were called shortly after Boutwell went on an extended leave of absence for unspecified reasons when discrepancies were allegedly discovered by county employees with the Circuit Court Office.
Boutwell was placed on $2,500 bond in Lauderdale County Justice Court.
