Christian contemporary music artist Carman has been singing and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ for 26 years.

Today, the New Jersey native will be performing in Meridian for a special free concert. Church of the Way, located at 7387 State Blvd. Extension, will host the concert. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the concert begins at 7 p.m.

Turns out, the church’s Web site may have helped draw the popular Christian artist for the free concert.

“His agent called us and asked us if he could come here for a love offering,” said Pastor Ralph Henson. “We asked why they chose us, and they said they looked up churches on the Internet, and really just pulled us out of a hat. So, it’s really amazing, and we’re very excited.

“It’s incredible. We had been praying for God to do something, that something would happen.”

Carman is well known in Christian circles for his high-energy shows. He started out playing in different clubs, and eventually performed in Las Vegas.

His Christian story began when he attended an Andrae Crouch concert. He received Christ at that concert — and the rest is history.

Carman has received 15 gold and platinum albums, and recently held a concert in Texas that marks the largest Christian concert in history — 71,000 people attended.

Church of the Way’s Minister of students, Daniel Crouch, recalls his first experience with the music artist.

“I remember me and my brother Jake listening to Carman’s hip hop CD for kids years ago when we were little,” Crouch said. “Carman was the one who changed the Christian music scene, and still does that to this day. He reaches everybody.”

Church of the Way seats 800, so it may be wise to arrive early, Henson said.
