The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the Aug. 30 shooting of a Meridian man.
Raphael Robert Taylor, 27, died Aug. 31 in a Jackson hospital after being found critically injured on Earl Haney Road about 12:30 a.m. Aug. 30. The driver who found Taylor thought he had been struck by a car and called 911. Deputies arrived on the scene to find he had been shot twice.
According to Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun, witnesses had heard gunshots in the area around 10 p.m. Witnesses also said they saw a large, dark SUV, possibly maroon in color, leave the area after they heard the gunshots. The SUV had blacked-out rims.
"We're still working on leads, but nothing new as of right now," Calhoun said.
Earl Haney Road is a short road located north of the Whynot community that connects Highway 19 South and Old Highway 19 Southeast.
Taylor was transported to a Meridian hospital by Metro Ambulance. He was transferred from there to the Jackson hospital.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers 1-855-485-TIPS (8477) or the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department at 601-482-9806.
