Dr. Azhar Pasha, founder of Pain Management Center of Meridian, has completed the first procedure in Mississippi to implant a new neurostimulation system for the treatment of chronic back pain. The patient had been experiencing severe back pain that had not been relieved through conventional treatments, but after receiving the neurostimulation system, he is now able to go about his daily activities more comfortably.

The device Dr. Pasha used in the procedure is the smallest and thinnest neurostimulator available and comes with a remote-control programmer that gives patients significant control over their pain therapy. This neurostimulator is rechargeable and allows patients to go as long as two weeks before needing to recharge.

Neurostimulation uses an implantable medical device to deliver electrical pulses to the epidural space in order to block pain signals traveling through the nervous system from reaching the brain. The neurostimulator Dr. Pasha used is smaller than a pocket watch. It was placed under the skin of the back and connected to flexible wires that deliver the electrical pulses. In contrast to surgical treatments for chronic pain, the neurostimulation therapy is adjustable and reversible.

The system's patient programmer includes an innovative feature that allows patients to make appropriate and immediate adjustments in their stimulation. By using the remote control patient programmer, patients can fine-tune their stimulation to specific sites up and down the spinal cord to best address normal fluctuations in pain. These adjustments allow patients to customize their pain therapy in a way that was previously only possible with a physician programmer during an office visit.

"This procedure is a great solution for patients with chronic back pain who haven't found results with conventional procedures," Dr. Pasha said. "They will enjoy being able to make therapy adjustments as needed with the handheld programmer."

Pain Management Center of Meridian is located in the Annex Building of Riley Hospital. Dr. Azhar Pasha and his partner, Dr. Hashim Khan, serve patients suffering from acute or chronic neck and back pain, work-related injuries, auto accident injuries, shingles pain, cancer pain, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches and more.
