BRANDON, Miss. —
An 83-year-old man has been granted a continuance for his trial in Rankin County Circuit Court on a manslaughter charge in the hit-and-run death of a 10-year-old Richland student.
District Attorney Michael Guest tells The Clarion-Ledger the court appearance of Raymond Watts of Florence has been moved to Sept. 23, 2013.
Guest says the continuance was granted Monday after Watt's attorney, Bill Townsend, said he could not properly assist his client in his defense because of Watts' health condition.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Watts also was charged with felonious fleeing the scene of an accident on Nov. 1, 2011, when he allegedly hit Allen Lutrick as the boy was attempting to board a school bus.
