Scott Co. toddler's death rule homicide

FOREST, Miss. —

Scott County authorities say the death of a 3-year-old girl has been ruled a homicide and a woman is charged with capital murder.

Sheriff Mike Lee says 3-year-old Samaria Harris died Saturday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she had been hospitalized since May 1.

Lee says 25-year-old Lamonica Johnson has been charged with capital murder. Johnson is being held in the Scott County jail pending an initial court appearance.

County Coroner Joe Bradford says an autopsy showed the child died of blunt force trauma.

Lee says an investigation in the case is ongoing.
