Man Gets 8 Years in Wreck Death

COLUMBUS, Miss. —

A 24-year-old Lowndes County man has been sentenced to eight years for the death of his friend in a fatal accident more than two years ago.

WCBI-TV in Columbus reports that Cordarius Stewart pleaded guilty in Lowndes Circuit Court on Wednesday to DUI manslaughter in the Aug. 31, 2010 death of 21-year-old Jamie Whooper.

Circuit Judge Lee Coleman sentenced him to eight years and fined him $3,600. The sentence runs consecutive to a five-year burglary sentence he's currently serving.

Prosecutors say Stewart was trying to flee sheriff's deputies when he lost control of the car and it flipped into a ditch, ejecting Stewart and Whooper, who later died from his injuries.
