2 wounded in shooting at service station

PICAYUNE, Miss. —

A Picayune police officer is on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting of two men at a local service station.

Deputy Police Chief Chad Dorn tells the Picayune Item that the shooting occurred Thursday night when officers responded to a report of a fight in progress with a gun.

Dorn says when the officers arrived the men tried to leave and were ordered to stop. Dorn says the driver put the car in gear and drove toward the officers.

Dorn says an officer then shot into the vehicle and struck the driver and a passenger. The men were taken to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Dorn says the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the case.

None of those involved have been identified.
