Police: man mauled by his own pit bull

WAVELAND, Miss. —

Police say a Waveland man was hospitalized after he was mauled by his pit bull.

Detective Eddie Peterson tells The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/140L4jq ) the attack continued for about 20 minutes Tuesday before police arrived at the man's home.

When police arrived, Peterson says they found the dog had latched on to the man and appeared to have serious injuries. He says officers got the dog off the man, and he was taken to a hospital.

Peterson says animal control officers seized four other dogs that appeared to be malnourished.

The man was not identified.
