Gulfport man gets 17 years in hit-and-run death

GULFPORT, Miss. —

A 27-year-old Gulfport man, who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old, has been sentenced to 17 years by a Harrison County circuit judge.

District Attorney Joel Smith tells The Sun Herald Maurice Bogan was on parole for burglary when he hit Elisha Skinner in Gulfport on Jan. 22, 2012.

During the hearing Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney Crosby Parker told Judge Roger Clark that Bogan was passing another vehicle when he hit the girl, who was walking home.

Parker said if Bogan had chosen to go to trial, a witness would have testified that after hearing a collision, Bogan stopped the car briefly in the road but then sped off.

Bogan was sentenced Thursday.
