Woman accused in dog hoarding case surrenders

WIGGINS, Miss. —

A 51-year-old woman accused of hoarding dogs surrendered to authorities and was booked on a charge of animal cruelty and 117 counts of animal neglect.

The Sun Herald reports Shirley Gai, Pearl River County, had been sought since Tuesday, when authorities went to a home she owns and seized 117 mixed-breed dogs living there without food or water. Gai did not live at the home.

Deputies also found dead dogs inside and outside the home, some stuffed in old dog food bags or in large black garbage bags.

Gai was released Thursday on a $3,000 bond. She's scheduled to go to court on April 24.

It was unclear whether Gai has an attorney.
