Man goes to trial this week on murder charge

NATCHEZ, Miss. — A Natchez man is set to go to trial this week for the botched robbery-turned-fatal shooting.

The Natchez Democrat reports the murder and armed robbery trial for Davarious Clemons is set for Wednesday.

The trial was moved from its original July date at the request of the defendant, who through his legal counsel asked for more time to prepare his case.

Clemons was arrested Oct. 7, 2011, in the death of 30-year-old Cedric Morgan.

Police Chief Mike Mullins says Clemons allegedly attempted to rob Morgan. He says Morgan refused to give Clemons money and was attempting to flee when Clemons reportedly fired a shot into Morgan's vehicle.

An Adams County grand jury indicted Clemons in March. He was released on a $90,000 bond in April.

Mississippi could borrow $20 million to help Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. update its factory in Tupelo. In return the company would pledge to maintain at least 1,300 jobs and invest $140 million in the plant. Do you think this is a good investment on the state's part?
