Suspect charged in Columbus fatal shooting

A 30-year-old West Point man faces murder charges after authorities say he fled the scene of a Sunday shooting.

WTVA TV reports Columbus police initially responded to a vehicle accident just before 3:30 a.m.

Upon arriving at the 1600 block of Highway 45 North, officers found 47-year-old John Easley in the passenger seat of a car with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Short time later, police began a manhunt to locate the driver of the vehicle and apprehended James Newsom.

Newsom is being held in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, after being arrested and charged with murder.

It was unclear whether Newsom has an attorney.

Police say the case remains under investigation.
