Decatur recognizes Frances H. Jordan as Citizen of Year

DECATUR – 2009 Citizen of the Year Frances Haik Jordan will be honored at the annual Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce Banquet.	The event will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. in the East Central Community College Cafeteria. The award is presented to an individual who was very instrumental in organizing the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce.	A Meridian resident for most of her life, Jordan married the late Joe Haik. The couple had two children, Braxie and Mac. Haik died in 1955 after a serious illness. At the time of his death, Braxie was 10 years old and Mac was 8.	Braxie was involved in many activities and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. Mac played sports and was a Meridian Wildcat. Upon graduation, he was visited by Ole Miss Coaches Johnny Vaught and Bruiser Kinard, who signed him to play at the Oxford college. After graduation, Mac was drafted by the Houston Oilers, where he played for five years before retiring to go into business.

Annual Homemakers Arts and Crafts Show and Sale

What started out as a fund-raiser for area homemaker clubs has evolved into a weekend extravaganza – with hints of a social gathering.	"It's like a reunion. You get to see old friends from previous years, as well as meet new ones," said Meredith Donald about the annual Homemakers Arts and Crafts Show and Sale.	"You also get the opportunity to sell something you made yourself," added Donald, who, for 15 years, has sold her pillows, baby quilts and Christmas stockings at the annual arts and crafts show and sale.

Seventh annual festival to celebrate Piney Woods’ heritage

STARKVILLE – The arts, history and music of the past will be celebrated at the seventh annual Piney Woods Festival at Mississippi State University’s Crosby Arboretum in Picayune.	The festival will provide an opportunity for attendees to have fun while learning about the early days of the Piney Woods region.	“The arboretum provides the perfect setting for learning about arts and heritage crafts,” said Patricia Drackett, the arboretum’s senior curator. “We want to preserve those arts by providing a fun and interactive event.”

Meridian Symphony Orchestra dedicates Oct. 31 concert

October is an exciting month for the Meridian Symphony Orchestra as it joins forces with Meridian hospitals, organizations and support groups to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Meridian. It began this summer as representatives from the Meridian Symphony showed interest in observing a worthy cause in conjunction with one of its season concerts. Since the Meridian Symphony has a concert in October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month — it seemed fitting to partner with breast cancer groups in Meridian to provide a platform for awareness and observance. The Oct. 31 concert has developed into an exciting night of extraordinary music and observance of the worthy cause, including a pre-concert reception and a silent auction featuring a painting by a Meridian artist.
