Alabama holds off Mississippi in AL-MS Classic

MERIDIAN —

McGill-Toolen's Thomas Hamlin kicked three first-half field goals to lead Alabama to a 21-16 win in Saturday's Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic at Cramton Bowl.

    Hamlin's kicks covered 30, 35 and a career-high 51 yards. He also missed a 52-yarder.

"I'm just thankful to be here," Hamlin said. "I don't deserve to be here with all these players and how good, how fast and how great they are. It's amazing just to be here."

A high school teammate of Hamlin's was Alabama's biggest star. Jason Smith, a quarterback in high school who is likely to play receiver in college, caught six passes for 134 yards.

Defensive lineman Chris Jones of Houston was Mississippi's most valuable player. He finished with eight tackles, including a sack and three tackles for loss.

"I'm not going to say I was the best of the best," Smith said. "I just thank my coaches for putting me in that situation."

Foley's Cedrix Reed had a 30-yard touchdown run and Austin's Joshua Walker a 9-yarder to give Alabama a 21-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Mississippi used two long touchdown passes and a safety to pull within five.

Charleston's Kameron Myers caught a 47-yard TD pass from Oxford's Parker Adamson and Eupora's Derrick Jones pulled in a 41-yarder from Ocean Springs' Wes Windham. Jones' score came with 4:41 remaining.

Mississippi got the ball back with 2Ω minutes remaining at its own 23-yard line but was unable to get a first down.

Adamson finished 12-of-21 passing for 117 yards and two interceptions. Myers had five catches for 82 yards, while Jones caught four balls for 55 yards.

Quarterback Nick Mullens of Spain Park was 8-of-12 for 156 yards for Alabama, which has won five straight from Mississippi and leads the All-Star series 19-7.
