Roundup - Knights win tourney opener

MERIDIAN —     The West Lauderdale boys basketball team bounced back from a loss to rival Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday with an opening-round win Thursday in the Newton County tournament.

    The Knights edged Choctaw Central 57-51, advancing to Saturday’s championship game at 7:30 p.m., where they will face the Newton County-Northeast Jones winner.

    K.D. Edmonds led West, which improved to 14-3, with 20 points. J.D. Williams added 14 and Vince Watkins finished with 10 for West.

    LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama women's basketball team overcame a 31 percent shooting performance to notch its third straight win Thursday night.

     UWA improved to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference.  

    Brittany Weathers scored 20 points to lead four UWA players in double figures. Jamie Gunter added 15 points, Nikkia Jordan 13 and Tamya Thompson 11.
