Florida Gulf Coast holds off Alcorn State 50-48

FORT MYERS, Fla. —

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Chase Fieler scored 16 points and Florida Gulf Coast made 2 of 4 free throws in the last minute to hold off Alcorn State 50-48 Wednesday night.

The Eagles (3-2) led 26-15 at intermission of the Battle 4 Atlantis game, but the Braves (1-4) chipped away, taking a 37-36 lead with 9:18 remaining.

The game was tied five times in the second half, with Josh Nicholas hitting two Alcorn State free throws with 1:11 left to make it 48-48.

After Sherwood Brown made the front end of a 1-and-1 with 58 seconds remaining, the Braves' Anthony Evans missed a 3-pointer.

Christophe Varidel, who finished with 10 points, also hit the first of two foul shots for Florida Gulf Coast, then Evans missed another 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Evans had 19 points, making 3 of 12 from long range.

Florida Gulf Coast scored 23 points off 20 Alcorn State turnovers.
