— Top Soccer held its first ever soccer jamboree on Saturday at the Jaycee Soccer Complex in Meridian.

The organization is sponsored by Meridian Youth Soccer Organization and brings soccer to special needs children. The event saw 16 participants and over 100 supporters from both county and city schools for the event. Members of the Meridian Futbol Club were also on hand to help kids compete in events ranging from soccer-golf to soccer-bowling.

“Man we had a great day,” Meridian Youth Soccer Organization president Neil Henry said. “It was my best day as a MYSO board member. Just seeing our kids give back made us really proud.”

Each participant was paired with a “soccer buddy” from MFC who helped guide them through the drills and shared in plenty of high-fives and hugs after goals. At the end of the event, each participant was given a soccer ball, t-shirt and patch.

“Every one of the kids scored and had fun,” Henry said. “It was just a great day to see all the kids and how they loved it. The best part about it was not only the family members, but there were plenty of teachers out to support the event. It was just great to see everyone involved.”

Henry said Saturday’s event is just the beginning as Top Soccer also plans to hold a second jamboree in the spring which would

possibly lead into a three-week season.

“We are trying to get the word out, because a lot of people didn’t even know what Top Soccer was all about,” Henry said. “My intention is to partner with the schools and pick a day where schools can transport kids to the field and have a huge jamboree. It could be a big, fun day for everybody to come out and play. Then, we can use that to start a Top Soccer league where they actually play games on specific nights.”

Henry said Top Soccer is still looking for members and volunteers. Those interested in becoming a part of the program can contact him by phone at 601 934 3762 or by email at neilarchist@gmail.com.
