Newton County splits two games Saturday

DECATUR — Newton County High School earned a split Saturday with a 13-4 win against Lake High School and a 6-4 loss to St. Andrews High school

Lake scored the first four runs of its game and held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Butthe Cougars, led by two doubles from Cale Hollingsworth, scored 11 runs to take a solid lead against Lake.  

Newton County’s Alec Ivy was able to hold Lake scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning while the Cougar bats added one run in the bottom of each inning to end the game with the 13-4 victory.

Walter Williams was the pitcher through four innings of play.  Jacob Edwards had a double and a single for the Cougars.

St. Andrews 6, Newton County 4

The Cougars were unable to hold off a late game push by Saint Andrews and fell 6-4 in Game 2 Saturday night.  

The Cougars scored first in the bottom of the second when Tanner Elders grounded out to second scoring Austin Elders. They scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Austin Elders singled to center field, scoring Cain Cleveland.

Saint Andrews got on the board in the top of the fifth on a Ray Wilson single to right field, scoring J.G. Burnett. Connor Woodall reached home on a error in right field, and the score was tied at 2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars answered back when Edwards connected on single to center field scoring Griffin. In the bottom of the sixth, Cleveland stole home on a wild pitch giving the Cougars the 4-2 lead going into the seventh.

In the top of the seventh, Saint Andrews produced four runs before the Cougars’ Peyton Cain could retire the side. Newton County was unable to score any runs in the bottom of the inning.

Tanner Elders was the losing pitcher for the Cougars. Saint Andrews improved to 6-4 on the year, while Newton County left the day at 7-5 overall.
