Jones County JC falls to Co-Lin in MACJC tournament

CLINTON — The season ended for the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats here Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Region 23 Tournament.

The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves took the lead for good with less than 13 minutes to play and defeated JCJC 63-58 in the A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College.

The Lady Bobcats were sluggish offensively, committing 23 turnovers alongthe way. They end the season at 19-8.

Co-Lin, 17-7, advances and will play Baton Rouge Community College (La.) at noon on Friday in a semifinal matchup. BRCC edged Meridian Community College, 80-79.

JCJC started off the game well and took a 13-9 lead with 13:00 left in the first half when Alyson Johnson scored. They extended the lead to 24-16 with 6:47 left when Caitlyn Spane hit a 3-pointer from the right wing.

The Lady Bobcats took their longest lead of the game at 32-23 with 1:45 left when Kadie Parker hit a 20-footer. But Co-Lin scored the final six points of the half and trailed 32-29 at intermission.

JCJC went ahead 42-38 with 13:48 to play when Crystal Clay made a free throw. But the Lady Wolves then went on a 9-0 run and would never trail again. Tyrisha Patterson's 18-footer with 12:40 showing gave Co-Lin the lead for good at 43-42. Another Patterson basket at 11:45 ended the 9-0 run and made it 47-42.

Co-Lin would take its longest lead of the game at 56-46 with 6:32 to play on another Patterson basket. But JCJC went on an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 56-54 with 2:50 left when

Chelsea Phillips scored. After Claresa Banks made two free throws for Co-Lin with 2:31 left,  JCJC's Kaylan Hughes scored to make it 58-56 with 2:13 to play.

Ashley Minor then scored for Co-Lin and Tyra Gibson added a free throw with 28.3 seconds left to make it 61-56. Hughes then made two free throws with

19.2 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 61-58.

But Co-Lin's Keyana Miller would hit two free throws with 7.4 seconds left to seal the game.

Hughes had another double-double for Jones, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Johnson added 11 points. Spane had nine rebounds, while Latisha McCullum had three assists for the MACJC champion Lady Bobcats.
