EMCC’s Wilma Davis nets MACJC award

SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College sophomore guard Wilma Davis has been named the MACJC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her individual efforts during last week’s Lady Lion victories over Itawamba and Northwest Mississippi.

Davis, a former West Point High School standout, averaged 18.5 points for the week while setting personal season scoring highs during consecutive outings.  Along with shooting 75 percent (15-of-20 FGs) from the field, including 5-of-8 (63%) accuracy from beyond the three-point arc, during the week, Davis also averaged 5.5 rebounds in the pair of Lady Lion victories.

After tallying 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 10 clutch first-half points, in EMCC’s key 74-70 double-overtime victory at Itawamba last Tuesday (Jan. 21), Davis followed two days later by scoring a career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 field-goal shooting, including 3-of-5 treys, in leading the Lady Lions to a 64-59 home triumph over Northwest Mississippi on Thursday.  She added five rebounds against ICC and six boards versus NWCC.

Most recently, Davis hit 4-of-7 shots from the field for eight points and collected three offensive rebounds during the Lady Lions’ 56-40 victory at Coahoma Monday night.

Winners of four consecutive games for their longest win streak since the 2010-11 season, EMCC women’s coach Sharon Thompson’s 10-6 Lady Lions have moved into a three-way tie for first place with Itawamba and Mississippi Delta among the MACJC’s North Division women’s standings with identical 5-1 division marks.

The East Mississippi basketball teams will begin the second portion of their MACJC North Division regular-season hoops slate by taking on Holmes Community College Thursday night in Goodman.  Basketball doubleheader action is set to tip off at 6 p.m. at Holmes’ Frank Branch Coliseum.
