FCA making a big splash for Eagles

MERIDIAN —     The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has played a very vital role for young people in Meridian and Lauderdale County over the years, but the role of the FCA has changed in a dramatic way on the campus of Meridian Community College.

I have seen many instances where the FCA is becoming more involved in our local high schools and now the influence of the organization has made a big splash at MCC.

Brandon Dewease is the District 5 FCA Director and many people may not be aware that his home office is right here on the campus at MCC.

Dewease is a 2001 graduate of West Lauderdale High School and participated in sports while in high school. After he graduated from Ole Miss in 2005, Dewease returned to WLHS as an assistant football coach. Dewease would later become a licensed minister through New Harvest Church was later ordained in 2010 by the same church. Dewease has served as the Youth Pastor and Associate Pastor at New Harvest for the past five years.

Dewease has been involved with FCA for just over a year and the changes just at MCC have been simply amazing.

"FCA is a missions position but based here in our local area," said Dewease. "When I chose to stop teaching high school I knew that I would need an office to base the ministry out of here in Meridian. I went and spoke to Dr. Elliot about the opportunity to have an office here on campus, and was offered space in the athletic department right next to several of the other coaches. That literal open-door has done an extraordinary amount for the growth of my relationships with the staff here at MCC, and I believe that it is been the catalyst for the ministry to grow exponentially here on campus."

Dewease has been actively involved with the athletes at MCC and the coaches as well.

The students meet every Thursday afternoon for FCA Huddle at 12:30 and the coaches also have a time of devotion every Monday morning at 10:30.

FCA has also worked in conjunction with the Baptist Student Union to serve meals at Love's Kitchen and the

two organizations also assisted with new students as they moved into housing for the start of the semester.

"The Lord has put us in this world, but we are not to be of this world," added Dewease. "One of the ways that we as Christians are to accomplish this task is by being ministers wherever we are, doing whatever job God has called us to do.

FCA joins the world of sports and the life of a believer in Christ. It is a fundamental way for us to teach young kids about how to join their faith with their real life, every day Christian walks. That is priceless."

The impact of FCA at Meridian Community College has been a blessing to the students and staff.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Brandon and the board members of FCA who make it possible for the message to be spread on campus.

I hope that you will support this great organization in all of their endeavors and sometimes the most important part in the life of an athlete is the encouragement they receive from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
