—     The stage is set for another Class 4A South State showdown between Newton County and West Lauderdale as the Knights swept Lawrence County on Saturday afternoon to advance.

West won the first game, 12-2, enforced by the 5-inning run rule. Game 2 proved to be more of a battle, but late home runs lifted the Knights, 9-8.

"It's only good teams this time of year," West head coach Cary Luke said. "We held on and played pretty good ... They just didn't quit, they kept battling."

In both games the Knights relied on hot hitters to score in big innings. In Game 1, they unloaded four runs in the second and five in the third. Breanna Sharp was 3 for 4 with a home run. Anna Gilbert was 2 for 3 with home run. Four other Knights had multiple hits en route to the win.

"We just got some big hits," Luke said.

Game 2 was tied 5-5 going into the fifth inning. Senior third baseman Alexa Hogan hit her first home run of the season in the top of the inning to put the Knights up 7-5. A seventh inning home run by Sharp proved to be bigger than the 9-5 lead it gave them.

In the bottom of the inning, Lawrence County hit a pinch-hit home run to pull within one, 9-8, but couldn't tie the game.

West will host the South State final on Tuesday, game times have not been set.

"Here it goes again," Luke said. "It feels like it's us and them every year. We are going to have to play well. They are really, really good."
