No. 4 Lions blank host Tigers in blowout

MERIDIAN —     It took about a minute and a half for No. 4 East Mississippi Community College to turn Thursday’s game in Booneville into a blowout.

The Lions turned turnovers on host Northeast Mississippi Community College’s first four possessions into touchdowns, three coming in a 1:29 span, as they blasted the Tigers 49-0. It was EMCC’s third shutout in the past four games and the Lions have blanked their opponents in 22 out of 28 quarters this season. EMCC’s win, which moves the Lions to 7-0 and 4-0 in the MACJC North Division, coupled with Northwest Mississippi’s 32-20 win against Holmes on Thursday, sets up a division-championship showdown in Scooba on Thursday. The Rangers are 6-0 and 5-0 in the division.

The Lions’ first score was set up by Justin Cox’s third interception of the year and EMCC made it count when Quez Johnson hit Billy Shed on an 8-yard pass with 10:54 left in the first quarter. One play later, Frank Richardson recovered a Northeast fumble at the Tigers 21. On EMCC’s first play, Johnson found Nick Brassell open in the corner of the end zone and the Lions led 14-0 with 10:33 remaining in the first.

Two plays later, Richardson again stepped up as he picked off a Matt Lipham pass and returned it 27 yards to push the lead to 21-0 with 9:25 left in the opening period. A Shaquille Fluker interception on Northeast’s next drive resulted in a 3-yard run from Johnson later in the quarter.

Johnson added a 2-yard scoring run in the third as EMCC, which led 28-0 at the break, now led 35-0. In the fourth, backup quarterback Dontreall Pruitt hit Martay Maddox on a 14-yard TD pass and Xavier Hogan tacked on a 2-yard TD run.
