MERIDIAN —     Another Breland Bowl and another Union victory.

For the second straight year, the Yellowjackets edged Lake to win the battle between coaching brothers Brad and Jeff Breland, winning 8-7 at home Thursday. And for the second straight year, the win gives Union control of the Division 5-2A championship race.

“It was a real good game,” Brad Breland said. “It was a defensive struggle.

“To have lost all the seniors we did, there was a lot of people doubting us and telling our kids they wouldn’t even win three games. So for us to be sitting here with a chance to win the region championship, I’m just tickled to death for them.”

Union, which improved to 7-2 and 3-0 in the division, got its chance for the division crown with a score on its first possession of the game. There, Jesse Gill hit Adrian Campbell on a 60-yard touchdown pass and James Huddleston then tacked on the two-point conversion.

Lake, which fell to 6-2 and 1-1, answered with its own score in the second quarter but couldn’t capitalize three other times when it drove inside the Union 10 as the Yellowjackets hung on.
