Cougars hold off Raiders in final minute

MERIDIAN —     Even after Brookhaven Academy retook the lead with 33 seconds left Friday, Lamar had a shot.

Lee Martin returned the kickoff to the BA 49 and then hauled in a Barrett Dudley pass down to the Cougars' 22 with 18 seconds left. However from there, the Raiders were unable to convert and Brookhaven Academy intercepted Dudley in the end zone on the final play of the game.

Lamar, which ends its season 9-4, fell behind 14-0 after the first quarter as Landon Nettles scored on a 52-yard run and Gage Posey hit Matt Evans on a 44-yard pass following a Corey Skinner fumble in the opening period.

However, the Raiders charged back in the second. Skinner, who would churn out 204 yards on 33 carries, scored on a 35-yard run to pull Lamar within 14-7 with 9:06 left in the half. The Cougars answered with a 2-yard run from Posey but with less than a minute until halftime, Lamar scored on an 11-yard pass from Dudley to Chase Davis. The kick was blocked, though, and the Raiders trailed 21-13 at the break.

With 10:41 left in the third quarter, Lamar pulled within two as Dudley hit Martin on a 47-yard score and the two-point attempt failed. Seven minutes later, Lamar took its first lead as Dusty Weisner hit a 24-yard field to put the Raiders up 22-21. Brookhaven, though, again answered. With 2:15 left in the third, Posey scored from 1 yard out and the Cougars led 27-22 entering the fourth.

With 8:34 remaining, Lamar regained the lead again as Skinner scored his second touchdown from 9 yards out and the Raiders led 28-27 following a failed two-point attempt. Then with 33 seconds left, Posey tacked on his third scoring run from 3 yards out on third-and-1 to give Brookhaven the lead and set up the dramatic conclusion.
