The Meridian Star
Meridian High School's Kayla Gordon was named to the Mississippi North/South All-Star Basketball game on Thursday, joining 25 other junior girls from across the state.
The game, comprised entirely of high school juniors, will be played on July 12 at Wood Coliseum on the Mississippi College campus.
“It's exciting,” Gordon said. “I'm shocked, but I worked hard all year to get recognized in the all-star game. I'm just really excited.”
Gordon was a force for the Wildcats in the 2012/13 season, averaging 17.2 points and 11.4 rebounds a game for Meridian.
“She does things that are uncoachable,” Meridian girls basketball coach Patricia Wilson said. “She is very explosive inside. She is pretty much a big part of our defensive presence as well as our offensive presence.”
Gordon will represent Meridian on the South team and is the only girl in the area to be selected as an all-star. The talented junior said she is proud to represent her school and can not wait to compete against some of the state's best athletes
“It can only make me better,” Gordon said. “It will let me know what I need to work on and what my strong points are. I'm going to get in the gym this summer to make me better. I like competition, and playing in the all-star game, there is a lot of competition.”
A 4.2 student at Meridian, Gordon plans to play college in college as well. As of now, she is keeping her recruitment open but stated she wants to play college ball close to home.
