West Lauderdale sweeps Poplarville

MERIDIAN —     West Lauderdale held off host Poplarville twice Tuesday night, 5-4 and 15-11, in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs and advanced to Saturday’s second round where the Knights will host North Pike.

    The Knights (16-8) got a three-run home run from  Ana Gilbert in Game 1 where they led 4-0 after the first and 5-0 through five. Mallory Vance added three hits and Randa Walker doubled in addition to earning the win. In the second game, West got two home runs from Sarah Lolley, a grand slam and three hits from Abbe Bates and three hits and a home run from Ashley Adams.

Enterprise routs Wesson in Class 2A

    Hayleigh Harper homered in each game Tuesday as the Bulldogs beat host Wesson 17-1 and 11-1. Enterprise hosts Taylorsville in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs Saturday.

    Emmalee Roberts added a three-run home run of her own in Game 1, while Harley Smith blasted a three-run home in Game 2 and Katie Jo Riley ended the second game with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Choctaw Central edges St. Patrick

    The Warriors moved into the second round on Tuesday, beating St Patrick 5-0 and 5-3.

    Candice Jefferson led the way for the Warriors in Game 1 with a triple and a single, while Jada Sockey and LaShayla McMillan also had multiple hits for Choctaw Central.

    In Game 2, Jonica Thomas led the Warriors with two singles and a triple. Raina King and and Caylin Nickey both had two hits.

    Tiara Joe was the winning pitcher in both games.

Quitman sweeps and advances to NC showdown

    Quitman received a scare Tuesday morning as second baseman Abigail Toomey and outfielder Hannah Harlan were thrown from their car during an accident. However, both were treated and released from the hospital, and not even injuries sustained from the wreck could keep the two from cheering on their fellow Panthers later on in the night.

    The Panthers did not disappoint, beating Greene County 6-5 and 13-5 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

    Tori Dew led the way in Game 1, batting 4-4 with a home run and three RBIs, including a two-run double in the sixth inning to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead. Mallory Lee and Glenella Odom also had two hits in game one.

    The Panthers would continue to hit the all in game two, as once again Dew led the way for Quitman. Dew went 3-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Lee went 3-5 with double, as Quitman rolled to a second round appearance. Hannah Hampton also had three singles and Annie Cooks has a three-run home run in Game 2 for the Panthers.
