Newton Co. advances to South State with win

DECATUR —     The Newton County baseball team advanced to the 4A South State championship Saturday night with a 12-2 win at home against Germantown.

    Peyton Cain (8-1) earned the win for the Cougars on the mound, going all five innings while giving up two runs on four hits and striking out four batters.

    Reagan Warren led Newton County at the pate, going three-for-four with 5 RBIs. Hunter Collins went three-for-three with two RBIs and Jacob Edwards had three hits as well on the night. Will Brand also chipped in two RBIs, going one-for three at the plate.

    With the win, the Cougars will travel to the winner of the West Lauderdale vs. St. Stanislaus series on Thursday night.
