MCC secures shutout over Mississippi Delta

MERIDIAN — Sophomore pitcher Mitchel Babb tossed six shutout innings and Paul Angel added three hits as MCC secured a 6-0 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College Tuesday afternoon at Scaggs Field. Babb allowed only two hits and collected three strikeouts, while  Kellon Hibbard tossed three scoreless innings in relief to complete the shutout effort for the MCC pitching staff.

    MCC scored its first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Angel in the bottom of the first inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Johnathan Youngblood started the inning by reaching on an infield single and crossed the plate on the groundout to second base by Angel.

    MCC (17-26) added its second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 2-0. Kevin Hall drove the run in for MCC on a bases loaded groundout to give the Eagles a two-run edge. Hall drove in a second run in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice to make the score 3-0 in favor of MCC.

    The Eagles put away the game for good with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the 6-0 victory over the Trojans.

    Alvin Franklin drove in one run in the seventh inning on an RBI single, while Angel chased Franklin home on an RBI double off the wall in left field.

    Charles Morton put the final touches on the victory for the Eagles with a solo home run to left field to add the final run of the game for Meridian.

    Mississippi Delta finished the game with only three hits, while MCC had eight hits in the contest. MCC is scheduled to return to action Thursday night at Scaggs Field in a single game against Shelton State Community College.

    The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
