The Meridian Star was able to catch up with No.1 Georgia Military College head coach Bert Williams on the eve of Sunday’s national championship game against No. 2 East Mississippi Community College at 2 p.m. from Biloxi High School Stadium.
Below are five questions on Sunday’s game:
The Meridian Star: How has your stay in Mississippi been these past two days?
Bert Williams: We’ve had great hospitality. Everyone has been super nice. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been a wonderful host since the day we got here. Everything has been first class, and it’s been a lot of fun for our kids.
TMS: You have travelled all over the country this season, even as far as Utah. Is traveling pretty much second hand to your players by now?
BW: We do that pretty much every year. This is actually a pretty short trip for us. Interestingly enough, we started the season here playing at Gulf Coast against Blinn Junior College for our first game. We are kind of coming full circle.
TMS: What is the secret to your running game which is averaging 293.5 yards a game on the ground this season?
BW: We’ve got a couple of really good running backs. One in particular, Jovon Robinson, is leading the country in rushing yards. He’s a very physical back that’s hard for one or two guys to bring down. He’s been prolific for us this year.
We got our other running back Akeem Judd healthy here the last half of the season. He really did a super good job for us as we went through the end of the regular season. We are also pretty good up front. Obviously when you are ripping off 15-20 yard runs you have holes to run through. The receivers have taken care of the secondary guys on the outside as well.
It’s really been a team effort when we run the ball. And while our numbers are pretty strong running, we feel good about the passing game and what we do. Our quarterback is very accurate and makes good decisions. We are very confident we can do a good job on offense.
TMS: What do you see when you look at No. 2 East Mississippi?
BW: They are a very talented team. They have a lot of team speed, and they play hard. Defensively, they are not super complicated, but they are very talented and very quick and very effective. When they do get out of position, they are fast enough to correct it.
“Offensively, they have done a great job of scoring a lot of points. Our defense will have to work a lot to keep them contained. They have a very good running back and a very good quarterback. They have a ton of passing yards, and I think a lot of that comes from their quarterback keeping plays alive for them.
TMS: East Mississippi has generated a lot of noise with the amount of points it has put up this season. Does your team come into the matchup with a chip on its shoulder since it is the No. 1 team in the nation?
BW: The NJCAA voted us there, so I don’t think we have to prove anything at this point. The winner is going to be the champion, and the loser is going to be the runner up. I guess we’ll find out what will happen tomorrow. We did a lot of things to get here, and we have put in a lot of hard work. Hopefully, that’s going to be enough to carry us through the day.
