The Meridian Star
The Meridian Futbol Club Juniors set out to Clinton last weekend with no expectations. Four games later, they returned back to Meridians as champions of the Clinton Division II Spring Classic Tournament. The under-seven boys team battled frigid weather as well as older teams, as the tournament allowed under-eight teams to compete.
“It was real cold, I mean it was freezing,” MFC juniors coach Trey Long said. “They were competing with kids who were older than them, and they did real good.”
The MFC Juniors won their first game 3-1, before winning 2-1 and 5-0 in their second and third games. The MFC Juniors dropped their final game 2-1, but ended up totaling the most points in the group to win the tournament.
“It was like a huge deal for us,” Long said. “We went over there and we didn't know what to expect. We were just trying to go over there and get a tournament experience, it just turned out being a great weekend full of memories we will have forever.”
The MFC Juniors were made up of kids from various Meridian Youth Soccer teams and competed for the first time together in the tournament. The MFC Juniors are made up of seven players: Raif Long, Landun Taylor, Drew Mitchell, Caden Boswell, Cooper Luke, Leeds Jenkins and Cooper Cornett.
“Meridian has a bright future in soccer,” Long said. “These are a great group of kids. They went over there and just played with a lot of heart. Obviously all the effort and hard work these kids have put in has payed off.”
