Newton County tames Jaguars

DECATUR —  The Newton County Lady Cougars combined a strong night at the plate and solid defense to defeat the North Pike Lady Jaguars 14-4 Friday night in second round action in the High School girls fast pitch softball playoffs.

The Lady Cougars were led by Ashton Lampton who was a perfect four for four at the plate including three singles and a double.

“This was a good team we faced tonight,” said Head Coach Justin Chaney. “I thought we had some key second out hits and Darby threw the ball really well.”

Darby Bishop was the winning pitcher allowing four runs of off seven hits and struck out one batter.

Newton County took the early lead in the bottom of the first when Savannah Gates connected for an RBI triple.  The Cougars ended the inning up 3-0.

North Pike scored 3 runs in the top of the fifth.  With the bases loaded and no outs, the Lady Cougars played smart defense to get two outs with out scoring a North Pike runner.  North Pikeís Jordan Fitzgerald hit an RBI double scoring two runs, followed by an RBI single by McKenzie Brock scoring three runs for North Pike.  The Lady Jaguars closed the gap and ended the inning down one with a score of 4-3.

The Lady Cougars finished the final two innings out scoring North Pike 10-1 to end the game in the bottom of the fifth 14-4.

“Coach Bishop always tells us, “Don’t win the next game, win the last game,”” said senior Hannah May. “That has been our motto this year.  We will go to North Pike tomorrow and find a way to win that game and keep moving towards the last game.”

The Lady Cougars, who improved to 26-4 on the season, will travel to North Pike Saturday night at 5.  They must win one game to advance to the third round of the playoffs. The Lady Jaguars fall to 14-12 after Friday night’s loss.
