MCC’s Cavin qualifies for national tournament championship

MERIDIAN —     Meridian Community College golfer Connor Cavin qualified for the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament, which will be next month at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.

The MCC team missed qualifying by two strokes at the conclusion of the District Tournament that took place earlier this week in Georgia.

"I am extremely proud of Connor for this honor,"  MCC head coach Ronnie Key said. "He was the only individual to qualify from our district. I'm also proud of our team for fighting as hard as they did in brutal conditions."

Cavin qualified by placing in the top 10 in the NJCAA District 4 Championship in Albany, Ga. Cavin was also named to the All-District 4 team on the merit of his stellar play throughout the year.

The Eagles finished the first two rounds on Monday just two shots out of the coveted sixth place position.

Six teams from the district tournament will move forward to play in the national championship. After a 5 1/2-hour rain delay, the Eagles were met with temperatures in the 40s and winds up to 25 mph. Although the effort was there, the result was gut-wrenching for the Eagles, who finished two shots behind Faulkner State, ranked fourth nationally.

    Cavin led the team by shooting 75, 73, 79 (227), and Ty Medling, who shot 74, 76, 79 (229), finished 17th.

Ty missed qualifying by only two strokes also. Rounding out the team scores were Dallas Shepard (76, 78, 79- 233), Nathan Kirkland (77, 78, 79- 234) and Austin Terrell (82, 76, 84- 242).

Host Darton College won the team title, with Wallace State finishing second.

The Eagles return to play next Tuesday and Wednesday at the MACJC state championship to be held at Pine Burr Golf Course in Wiggins.
