West beats Newton Co., 10-1, to remain undefeated

MERIDIAN — West Lauderdale High School reached the two-decade mark Saturday afternoon with a 10-1 win against Newton County High School.

And that's an unblemished 20 wins, as the Knights have yet to lose a game this season.

A grand slam by Colton McKeithen was the highlight of the day for West, which led just 2-1 before McKeithen connected on his big hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. West went on to score another run that inning, Blake Anderson added a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-1.

Mason Wooldridge (6-0) got the win for West, pitching six innings and giving up one run on four hits. West head coach Jerry Boatner said he was pleased with Wooldridge's pitching Saturday.

"Mason settled down and did a good job finishing the game," Boatner said. "We started off slowly, but overall we had a good game. There was good defense and good hitting against a good team. Colton's grand slam, got our momentum going, and we finished strong."

Having not lost a game, Boatner admitted the possibility of going undefeated is on everyone’s mind.

“It’s definitely on your mind,” he said. “People mention it to us. Since I’ve been coach, I haven’t known but two teams to go undefeated. It puts a little more pressure on you, and I definitely think it’s on not just my mind, but the players’, too.”

Newton County's Tanner Elders took the loss. He went five innings and gave up seven runs — six earned — on 12 hits. he also had one walk and struck out five.

Ryan Lane went 3-for-4 for West Lauderdale. Newton County's Jacob Edwards finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Cain Cleveland had the team's lone RBI.

Newton County (12-9, 2-5) will play Tuesday at Forrest County AHS. West (20-0, 8-0) will play Tuesday at Houston High School for a game that will determine the MHSAA Region 4-4A title, as Houston is also 8-0 in area play. Both of those games are weather-permitting.
