ECCC tennis squad defeats Northeast

BOONEVILLE — East Central Community College’s tennis squads scored victories over Northeast Mississippi Community College in matches played Tuesday.

The Lady Warriors cruised to a 7-2 win and the nationally ranked Warriors held on for a 5-4 decision.

EC captured four of six matchups in women’s singles, as Hannah Peoples of Winston Academy defeated Allison Wiltshire, 6-2, 6-0; Alana Turner of Florence beat Hannah Billingsley, 6-1, 6-1; Amber Pierce of Leake Academy beat Erica Whitten, 6-0, 6-1; and Nan Hartness of Winston Academy rallied to clip Haley Brown, 3-6, 7-5, (10-6). In other results, Hannah Smith of Leake Academy fell to Emily Wiltshire, 6-0, 6-3; and Katyln Patrick of Forest lost to Allie Downs, 6-4, 6-1.

The Lady Warriors won all three contests in doubles. Turner and Pierce beat Wiltshire/Billingsley, 8-1; Peoples and Hartness defeated Brown/Whitten, 8-3; and Lauren Peterson and Kristine Jenkins, both of Forest, clipped Nikki/Lindsey Clark, 8-5.

In men’s singles, EC winners were Juan Miranda of Morton, who beat Micah Page, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5); Daniel Giles of Union edged Wesley Brandon, 6-4, 6-3; and Javon Yarbrough of Louisville defeated Ande Mills, 6-0, 6-1. In other results, Brandon St. Clair of Union lost to Reid Price, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1; Ethan Rigdon fell to Wesley Tye, 7-5, 1-6 (10-4); and Tanner Moore of Winston Academy fell to Noah Wright, 6-2, 6-4.

Miranda and Giles teamed to win their doubles match with Page/Brandon by an 8-4 margin, and Yarbrough and Moore were also victorious in posting an 8-3 decision over Mills/Price. St. Clair and Rigdon fell 8-5 to Tye/Wright.

The Warriors are ranked 25th in the latest NJCAA poll.
