Meridian Spikes top Jackson Gems in extras

JACKSON — The Meridian Spikes of the Deep South Collegiate League took down the Jackson Gems, 5-4 in 13 innings Friday night to earn their first win of the season.

    Former Meridian Community College pitcher Witt Haggard earned the win for Meridian, pitching 6 2/3 innings of relief while striking out 10 batters and only allowing a single run.

    Former Newton County standout Raegan Warren led the Spikes at the plate, going three-for-six on the night. East Central's Zach May and Alex Smith of Arkansas Monticello also had three hits on the night.

    Meridian (1-3) will hold its home opener at Southeast Lauderdale High School, as the Spikes take on the Gems again for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m on Monday. Both games will be sponsored by Mugshots Grill and Bar of Meridian.
