ECCC softball squad blitzes MS Delta

MERIDIAN —     East Central Community College's fast-pitch softball squad improved to 6-0 on the young season following a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Delta Community College Friday, Feb. 14 on the Decatur campus.

    The Lady Diamond Warriors cruised 16-0 in the opener and posted an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.

    Lindsey Beard had two extra-base hits to lead EC's offense in the first contest, as the Clarkdale High School product doubled in the second inning and homered in the third. She finished with two RBIs and scored four runs.

    Also having multiple hits were Morgan Porter of Enterprise and Karoline Holsonback, a product of South Lamar High School in Kennedy, Ala., double and single each; and Mallory Turner of West Lauderdale, Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville and Ty Buckley of Neshoba Central, two singles each.

    Porter led in RBIs with four. Turner and Buckley knocked in two runs each and Hopkins was credited with an RBI.

    Other hitters were Hayley Stephens of Union and Christen Benson of Brookhaven, who each contributed a single. Stephens also knocked in two runs.

    Amber McBroom of Brandon was credited with an RBI.

    Hurlers Kendra Wilson and Megan Robinson were superb on the mound, as they combined efforts to register a no-hitter.

    Starter Wilson went three innings and fanned seven batters. She also walked a batter. Wilson is a product of South Lamar High School in Millport, Ala.

    Robinson pitched the final two innings. She is a product of Nanih Waiya High School.

    In the second contest, it was again all East Central as the Lady Diamond Warriors jumped out to a six-run lead after three innings.

    Porter homered and singled to lead the offensive attack.

    Also recording multiple hits were Buckley, double and single; and Turner and Hopkins, two singles each. Buckley led in RBIs with three.

    McBroom and Stephens each pounded doubles. Stephens was also credited with an RBI.

    Other hitters were Holsonback and Benson, who each singled and registered an RBI.

    Hurler Makayla Kelly went the distance in the five-inning battle. She fanned three batters while recording the shut out. She is a product of Nederland (Texas) High School.

    The Lady Diamond Warriors host Marion Military Monday, Feb. 17. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m. on the Decatur campus.

    EC's softball program is led by head coach Kristin Chaney, assistant Courtney Nunn and volunteer assistant Kasie Buckley.
