District 5 ousted with loss 12-5 loss

MERIDIAN —     MERIDIAN –– After defeating District 2 11-6 in eight innings earlier in the , District 5's run in the State Games of Mississippi All-Star Base Tournament came to an end, as the team fell 12-5 to District 8 to finish with a bronze medal on Saturday.

Division 5 started Game 2 off hot, jumping on Division 8 with four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. However, the juggernauts from the coast would come storming right back, capitalizing on seven-straight two-out hits in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 6-4

“Those guys can swing it,” District 5 head coach Matt Boone said. “Tw-out hits are always big, and it is always hard to overcome that. That was a big factor.”

District 8 out hit District 5 15-8 on the game, but it was what batters did after they reached base that proved to be the difference Saturday at Scaggs Field.

“They really put a lot of pressure on us on the bases,” Boone said of District 8's aggressive approach. “Some of our pitchers did not do a very good job of holding guys on, but that has a lot to do with not playing together over a long period of time. But yeah, they created a lot of havoc and made it tough for us all afternoon.”

Newton County's Peyton Cain and West Lauderdale's Colton McKeithen had productive days at the plate for District 5. Cain went two-for-three with an RBI while McKeithen led the team with three hits.

District was responsible for both of District 5's losses, as they beat District 5 12-0 on Friday.

“These kids fought hard,” Boone said. “They battled, and they are a better team than what they showed. You just have to tip your hat to them. Our guys fought back and battled back, we just weren't as good as they were.”

District 8 will move on to the gold-medal game today at Scaggs Field on the MCC campus.
