Webb, Hamilton added to EMCC football staff

SCOOBA —  East Mississippi Community College head football coach Buddy Stephens has added Louisiana high school coaching veteran DeCarlos Holmes and Starkville native Webb Hamilton to the Lions’ coaching staff.  The hirings have been approved by EMCC President Dr. Rick Young and EMCC Vice President/Director of Athletics Mickey Stokes.

With a decade’s worth of coaching experience in the Louisiana prep ranks, Holmes is assigned to handle the day-to-day coaching responsibilities of EMCC’s defensive line personnel.  Holmes, a former defensive standout at Grambling State University, has had 10 defensive linemen sign scholarships with NCAA Division I programs over the past seven years, including four players who have displayed their talents at SEC schools.

Most recently, Holmes spent last season as an assistant football coach at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.  While coaching seven defensive players who earned all-district honors a year ago, Holmes was instrumental in the Purple Knights’ 9-4 campaign that took them to the Louisiana Class 4A state semifinals.

Prior to his move to New Orleans, Holmes doubled as head football coach and athletic director at Woodlawn High School in Shreveport.  Administratively, he was influential in the remodeling of Woodlawn’s athletic weight room and football dressing room along with being responsible for the upgrading of the athletic department’s strength and conditioning program.

Holmes enjoyed most of his on-the-field success as the defensive line coach at powerhouse Bastrop High School.  Having claimed successive Louisiana Class 4A state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the Rams put together a four-year composite record of 55-2 during Holmes’ stint at the school.

Privileged to play for Hall of Fame football coach Eddie Robinson during the coaching legend’s final seasons at Grambling State, Holmes began his high school coaching career with one-year stops at Monroe’s Neville High School as well as in Arcadia, Crowville and Port Sulphur

A native of Grambling, La., Holmes earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Grambling State.  He is married to the former Kerith Caldwell, and the couple has three sons – Dailon, Kase and Kollin.

Hamilton, a former standout at Starkville Academy and graduate of Mississippi State University, is charged with the supervision of EMCC’s running backs in addition to serving as the staff’s video coordinator.  Most recently, he spent 18 months as the defensive backs coach at East Central Community College in Decatur.

Prior to moving into the junior college coaching ranks, Hamilton worked as a student assistant football coach while completing his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology at Mississippi State.  During the off-season in 2009, he assisted the Bulldogs’ defensive and special teams staffs with various administrative duties.  In addition, Hamilton helped with MSU’s summer football camps and assisted with the program’s day-to-day football operations and recruiting tasks.

Hamilton’s first taste of actual game day coaching responsibilities and weekly game-planning duties came at Starkville Academy during the 2007 and 2008 football seasons.  The 2006 SA grad, who was a member of the Volunteers’ 10-2 Mississippi Private Schools Association Class AAA, Division II state championship team in 2005, worked with the varsity team’s receivers and safeties.  Hamilton gained valuable on-field coaching experience by serving as the defensive coordinator for the Vols’ junior varsity squad while also handling the head coaching chores of the school’s seventh grade football team.

Following his high school graduation, Hamilton stayed in his hometown of Starkville to attend Mississippi State.  After being sidelined by two shoulder surgeries, he opted to join the Bulldogs’ football program as a student intern.  His initial experience in a coaching capacity had him assisting with practice film breakdown for MSU’s offensive line coach and offensive graduate assistant during the spring and summer months in 2007.

Hamilton is the son of Doug and Paula Hamilton of Starkville.
