Newton County wins Game 1 over Stanislaus

MERIDIAN — Will Brand and the Newton County baseball team shutout St. Stanislaus 2-0 Thursday night in Game 1 of the 4A South State Championship.

    Brand (12-1) went all seven innings for the Cougars, giving up just two hits while striking out eight batters.

    Jacob Edwards Austin Elders led Newton County at the plate, collecting two hits apiece.

    Brand knocked in the Cougars first run of the game in the top of the first, when he singled in Reagan Warren from third base with one out.

    Newton County got its second run in the top of the fifth, when Warren grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to score Hunter Collins from third base.

    Game 2 will be played at Newton County at 7 p.m. due to the schools graduation on Friday night. If necessary, a third game will be played Monday at St. Stanislaus.
