Russell Christian Aca. strong in Spring Game

MERIDIAN — The Russell Christian Academy football team got a taste of what 11-man football will be like in the fall, tying Sumter Academy (Ala.) 0-0 in the first half, before beating Clarkdale High School 19-6 in the second half during its Spring Game at Clarkdale Friday night.

The Warriors played the first half against Sumter with a running clock due to many of the Sumter players missing the game with stomach illnesses.

Russell Christian quarterback Jacob House was 2-2 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Receiver Ben McGraw had one catch for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Arik Washington led the Warriors on the ground, carrying the ball seven times for 72 yards and a touchdown. Ashton Temple had two carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Temple ad six tackles and recovered a fumble. Dylan Joles led the Warriors with nine tackles. Drake McKenzie, Nathan Gordan, Jesse Barksdale and Jacob Stevens all had eight tackles in the win.

“We are shaking the rust off,” head coach Nate Ballard said. “11-man is still new to us, so it took two quarters to get used to having those extra players on the field.

“The rest of it is just getting in shape and having some kids playing both ways. We are going to have to have that this year.”
