Roundup: Russell Christian falls to Patrician in season opener

MERIDIAN —     Despite the 44-7 loss to Patrician Academy, Russell Christian Academy kicked off the 2013 season with a bang. Russell's Ashton Temple ran back the opening kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown.

    Russell's Brandon Ford finished the night with 29-yards on four carries. On defense, Dylan Joles racked up eleven tackles and Jesse Barksdale had one interception and one fumble recovery.

    Calvary Christian's Smokey Washington put up 430 yards of total offense Friday night despite the Cougars' 48-28 loss to Veritas.

    Washington gained 287 yards on 24 carries including two touchdowns. Through the air, he went 6-for-21 with 143 yards. The highlight of the night was the 80-yard touchdown pass to Josh Roberts.

    Veritas led 22-8 at the half.

    Calvary will be back in action next week at Kemper Academy.

    It took a quarter, but Kemper County head coach Chris Jones earned his first win with the Wildcats as his team took down Heidelberg 54-26 Friday night.  

    After heading into the second quarter down 6-0, the Wildcats exploded for 40 yards in the second and third quarters to take down the Oilers on the road.

    Jones said he was pleased with the team's performance and hopes the Wildcats can build on the win as they travel to Scott Central next week.

    "Hard work just payed off," Jones said. "We worked our buts off, and our kids now see that rewards come with hard work."
