Wildcats open season with road win

MERIDIAN —     Despite a slow start, Meridian opened the 2013 season in style with a 34-7 win at Northwest Rankin. The Wildcat defense came within 2:38 of walking away with a shutout.

Meridian started rolling right before halftime, scoring on a one-yard rush from quarterback J'Mar Smith. Aaron Garrett's PAT was good giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 2:46 left in the half.

In the third quarter, Smith connected with Richard McQuarley on a 49-yard touchdown pass with 4:16 on the clock in the third quarter. The PAT was no good.

The Wildcat offense shined in the fourth quarter.

It started with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Smith to McQuarley. Garrett's PAT was good moving the score to 20-0.

Meridian running back Ed Glenn got in on the action next with a four-yard touchdown run followed by a Garrett PAT.

Meridian's last score of the night came on a 35-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Antonio Owens. Garrett's PAT pushed the Wildcats to a 34-0 lead with 7:42 left on the clock.

Northwest Rankin's sole score came off a 71-yard fumble recovery by Bobby Fatherree followed by a Cason Gooch PAT.

The Wildcats face another road battle next week as they head to Quitman.
