Meridian geared up for playoffs

MERIDIAN —     The Meridian Lady Wildcats will have more than a week off in between their last contest – a 63-55 defeat at the hands of Harrison Central – and their 6A State playoff matchup against top-seeded Horn Lake.

Yet the timing of the layoff couldn’t have come at a better time for coach Patricia Wilson and her squad.

“This layoff is going to be a big help,” Wilson said.

Two key contributors, Miracle Dubose and Kayla Gordon, are both currently nursing lingering issues, but the time off has helped get both players back close to 100-percent.

“We’re pretty healthy,” Meridian coach Patricia Wilson said. “We have a couple banged up ankles, but other than that we’re healthy.”

Dubose is recovering from a torn hamstring and a groin pull, while Gordon is still hobbled by an ankle injury that has been bothering her all season.

“It kind of limits her mobility a little bit,” said Wilson of Gordon’s ankle injury. “She’s a tough kid, and she’s playing through it.”

Despite facing favorite Horn Lake, Wilson believes that her Meridian (25-6) squad matches up well with the Eagles.

“We actually feel good about that matchup,” she said. “I think our personnel matches up well with them. [Horn Lake] played different teams than what we’ve played down here. [Horn Lake] has had a pretty good year, but I really don’t believe that they’ve played the level competition that we’ve played…We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Wilson said that the key for her squad will come down to not only physical ability, but also being mentally strong.

“We have to continue to play good defense and get after it, grab offensive rebounds and push the basketball,” the coach said. “Our guards have to stay mentally focused, make smart decisions and continue to play hard.”
